3 Reasons Why Teenagers Need Martial Arts Training

Reason #1.
The numbers related to bullying statistics are both shocking and disheartening.

stopbullying

Times have changed for those of us who have been out of middle and high school for the last two decades. Bullying has become a normal part of the landscape in American schools. The sad truth is that bullying has become just as cool in school as making the varsity sports team. The insecure kids with little to no self-esteem are the ones who are being bullied relentlessly both at school and online. Without any confidence to defend themselves or ability to defuse a physical confrontation, these kids are being ridiculed and abused by their peers daily.

20 percent of U.S. students in grades 9-12 reportedly have experienced bullying or are feeling bullied, while 28 percent of students in grades 6-12 report the same. Experts agree that most incidences of bullying occur during middle school.
According to one study cited by the DHHS, 29.3 percent of middle school students had experienced bullying in the classroom; 29 percent experienced it in hallways or lockers; 23.4 percent were bullied in the cafeteria; 19.5 percent were bullied during gym class; and 12.2 percent of bullied kids couldn’t even escape the torture in the bathroom.
70.6 percent of teens have seen bullying occurring in their schools – and approximately 30 percent of young people admit to bullying themselves.

Martial arts training has been proven to give kids confidence, self control and the ability to defend themselves from bullying or stranger danger. At Team Quest we have been teaching kids, teens and adults to become more confident and have taught self defense through martial arts training for over a decade.

REASON#2.
Obesity has more than quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years.

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years.

The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period.

In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.

REASON#3.
One in five high school girls have been physically and/or sexually assaulted.

1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys is sexually assaulted by age 16
43% of girls and 30% of boys  experienced unwanted sexual attention, including pressure for dates and sex
One in five high school girls have been physically and/or sexually assaulted by a dating partner, significantly increasing their risk of drug abuse, suicide and other harmful behavior.

The statistics for sexual abuse are horrific. The goal for us at Team Quest is to empower our youth so that they do not become a victim. Through martial arts training our teenage mma program students are becoming stronger, more confident and fully aware of their surroundings. Our hope is that they are positive role models and examples in their communities and would be able to defend themselves and others if need be against physical and sexual abuse.
